In 1978, Universal Handling Equipment was sold to the Gerrard family who recognized its tremendous potential. With change came corporate revitalization and the introduction of a more complete line of waste and disposal equipment to accommodate the growing demands of an expanding industry. Its growing reputation for producing innovative products and service became such that by 1981, it necessitated the opening of a manufacturing branch operation in Red Deer, Alberta. This corporate decision positioned Universal Handling Equipment as a national supplier and signaled its commitment to the industry.
And the growth continued. In 1994, Universal Handling Equipment opened its third facility in Owosso, Michigan, giving it international status. Within 5 years of its existence, Universal Handling Equipment has become the dominant waste and recycling container manufacturer in the north central United States. Its growth has been so rapid that its manufacturing facilities have had to be doubled to handle the demand.
Today, the Universal Handling Equipment group of companies consists of Universal Handling Equipment Company Limited, (Ontario Operations),
Universal Handling Equipment Company (Red Deer) Limited (Alberta Operations), Universal Handling Equipment Company, Inc. (a wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary), Weld-o-Matic Machines Company Limited, (Hydraulic cylinder
and spot welder manufacturer), and an equity interest in Goldec-Hamms an Alberta
tank manufacturer.
The Universal Handling Equipment group of companies, with its head-office in Hamilton, Ontario, now employs over 300 workers. With its young, dynamic team excited by the opportunities for growth, Universal Handling Equipment is well positioned to enter into its next development phase that being a waste and recycling supplier through out North America.
